Ballot Initiatives Nationwide

Perhaps Prop 8 is not on the mind of many New Yorkers or people outside California this Election Day as we scurry to find our polling place and cross our fingers hoping our name is in the holy book of registered voters and nothing goes wrong, but if you want to take a look at the vitriol people in California witnessed this past year as voters decide on Prop 8 check out today’s episode of Democracy Now with clips of the television ads placed by supporters of Prop 8 in California. See commentary from the Nation’s Richard Kim and learn more about the other ballot initiatives nationwide including the ones affecting workers and reproductive justice.

60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The UDHR is the foundational document in the international human rights system, which sets out the fundamental civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that every human being possesses by virtue of their birth.

To commit yourself to the principles of the UDHR in your daily life go to www.everyhumanhasrights.org and sign your name online.

The Center is celebrating the UDHR’s 60th Anniversary along with our coalition partners in the New York City Human Rights Initiative (NYCHRI).

NYCHRI works to educate civil society and local government officials about civil, political, economic, social, cultural, sexual and environmental human rights, and is currently lobbying for a City Council hearing on the Human Rights G.O.A.L. legislation, which would apply the progressive and proactive anti-discrimination principles of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as local law in New York City.

We will also be blogging about human rights issues on an ongoing basis on the Center’s Advocacy blog at www.gaycenter.org/centeradvocacyblog

Check out the blog and share your thoughts and opinions on a variety of human rights and social justice topics important to our communities!
