Provenance
These records were donated to the National archive of Lesbian and Gay History by Rudy Grillo on May 17, 1990. Mr. Grillo was with the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committeee from 1973 to 1976 and was designated by the Committee as a keeper of their records until an appropriate repository could be found. Additional material, including three audio tapes, and papers from 1976 to 1978 were added by Mr. Grillo in 1992.
Scope and Content
The collection covers the years 1970 to 1979 and contains financial records, press releases, Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee Calenders, minutes, questionaires, leaflets and correspondence. Three audio tapes include recordings of two Gay Activists Alliance (GAA) meetings. One of which passed a motion to censure GAA President Jim Owles. Another tape is of GAA's appearence on the Dick Cavett Show in 1970. Some material on the Christopher Street Festival Committee is also included.
History or Bio
The Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee was the original organizer, starting in 1970, of the New York Gay Pride March and Rally. At first a committee of representatives from various organizations, they later became fully independent. They continued to be the organizers until replaced by Heritage of Pride in 1984.
