Scope and Content

The Michael Callen Papers center on the AIDS crisis in general and specifically on the organizations with which he was associated. There are also a few poems, song lyrics and personal financial papers in the collection.
There is a significanat amount of material on the People With AIDS Coalition, their newsletter "Newsline," the Community Research Initiative, and the PWA Health Group. To a lesser degree the papers contain programs from various AIDS conferences, and talks given by Callen at some of these gatehrings. The collection also contains transcripts of the interviews with long term survivors of AIDS which Callen conducted for his book "Surviving and Thriving with AIDS: Collected Wisdon, Volume Two." A proof copy of this work as well as an annotated proof of his earlier "Surviving AIDS" are also in the collection. In addition there are 125 audio tapes, mostly of Callen's phone conversations.

Bio

Michael Callen was born on April 11, 1955 and died of AIDS related causes on December 27, 1993. A graduate of Boston University, School of Fine Arts, where he studied music, Callen spent most of his adult life in New York City, As a singer and song writer he worked both alone and with the "Flirtations" a capella singing group. In 1982 he was diagnosed with AIDS and quickly became a leading proponent of self-empowerment for People with Aids. He co-founded the People with AIDS Coalition in 1985, and was editor of its "Newsline." Later he co-founded the PWA Health Group and the Community Research Initiative where he served as Board President until 1989. A leading proponent of "safe sex," Callen co-authored How to Have Sex in an Epidemic: One Approach" (1983). He also wrote "Surviving AIDS" (1990), and "Surviving and Thriving with AIDS: Collected Wisdom, Volume Two (1993).
