52. William Bahlman Papers

Archive Number:
52
Date:
1987 - 1990
Size:
4.5 feet

Provenance

The Bill Bahlman papers were contributed to the National Archive of Lesbian and Gay History by Bill Bahlman in November of 1995.

Scope and Content

The William Bahlman Papers are almost totally AIDS related. They include early flyers from the Lavender Hill Mob and from ACT UP, New York City. There are some ACT UP minutes from 1987 and flyers etc. from their Treatment and Data Committee. A large portion of the collection are copies of testimony before the Presidential Commission on AIDS (1987-88). A much smaller amount of Congressional testimony is also included. There are a great many photocopies of AIDS related newspaper articles, especially relating to AZT and other drugs. There are several AIDS conference packets and lists of assignments from Bahlman's work with the cable TV program "Out in the 80's/90"s.

History or Bio

A member of the Gay Activists Alliance in the 1970s, Willaim Bahlman was a co-founder of both the Lavender Hill Mob and ACT UP New York. At the time of this writing (1997) he was still an active member of ACT UP. His primary interest was in the area of AIDS related treatments, and he was a frequent observer and sometimes participant in Congressional and Presidential Commission hearings. He was also a reporter for the cable TV program "Out in the 80's" (later updated to "Out in the 90's")
