In February 1973 Jacob Grubbay, organized a minyan of Jewish gay men and women to hold Shabbat services. They initially met at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Chelsea. Joined by another group of gay Jews who held services at the Metropolitan Community Church, they established Congregation Beth Simchat Torah, known informally as the “Gay and Lesbian Synagogue.”
Because of rapid growth in members, in 1975 CBST expanded into permanent quarters, building a synagogue in the Westbeth housing complex in West Greenwich Village. Having expanded the synagogue in Westbeth , nevertheless in the 90’s CBST was forced to move Sabbath Eve services back to Holy Apostles in order to accommodate the number of congregants attending services, Sabbath morning services remaining in the synagogue. High Holiday services were held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center , again to accommodate the large number of worshipers attending.
In 1976 CBST acquired their first torah. In 1977, they hosted the second International Gay Jewish Conference, sponsored by the Congress of Gay and Lesbian Jewish Organizations of which they are a founding member and active participant. A pioneer in the development of liturgy, in 1981CBST began to use a degenderized sidur written by themselves in weekly services. This was followed in 1982 with their own prayerbook for the High Holidays.
In 1991 CBST initiated a search for a rabbi, appointing Sharon Kleinbaum who was installed in the summer of 1992 by Rabbi Alexander Schlinder, then head of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the organization of Reform Judiasm . She previously has been an assistant to Rabbi David Saperstein, head of the UAHC’s social action and lobbying organization, the Religious Action Center, in Washington, D. C.
CBST is formally unaffiliated with any of the Jewish denominations. Having pioneered the development of gay-affirming, degenderized sidurs, they have now standardized on use of the Reconstructionist prayerbook as appropriately inclusive.
CBST is the second oldest synagogue in the U.S. devoted to a gay and lesbian congregation and, in the year 2000, is also the second largest.
