Scope and Content

These are all interviews with Allen Ginsberg that were published in various journals and magazines and collected by David Carter for publication in "Spontaneous Mind." Dates of the interviews range from 1958 to 1996.

Not all of the interviews here were included in "Spontaneous Mind," thus they are divided into "interviews included" and "not included" in the book. All of the interviews, however, have been published elsewhere. There are no unpublished interviews in this collection.

Folders 1-18 were published in "Spontaneous Mind." Numbers 19 - 45 were not published in the book.

Folders 46 and 47 contain the editor's Notes and Correspondence including editorial notes on the interviews and interviewees, letters and emails.

History or Bio

Allen Ginsberg was born on June 3, 1926 in New Jersey. He attended college at Columbia University and later lived in both New York and San Francisco. In 1956 he published "Howl and Other Poems," one of the most widely read and controversial poems of the 20th century. Ginsberg was involved in the political and social activism of the 1960s, which included protesting the Chicago Democratic Convention in 1968. His testimony in the Chicago Seven Trial is among the interviews. He continued his activism throughout the 1970s and 80s and eventually became a professor at Brooklyn College. Ginsberg died in New York on April 5, 1997.
