History or Bio

June 27, 1969 is the occasion where lesbians, gays, transgender persons fought against a typical police raid on the gay bar, Stonewall Inn, on Christopher Street, at Sheridan Square. (Greenwich Village, New York City) A “Gay Power” rally was held a month later, July 27, 1969, in Washington Square Park.
On June 28, 1970 the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee (CSLDC, predecessor to HOP) with about 2,000 people marched up 6th Avenue to a Gay-In in Sheeps Meadow, Central Park. The March continued each year on the last Sunday in June by CSLDC until 1984. In 1984 many of the CSLDC Board resigned and the remaining organizers formed Heritage of Pride. HOP started to be more organized, the first march permit was issued by the City and HOP eventually became an incorporated non-profit corporation. The Christopher Street Festival was sponsored by the gay bars and was held in the village on the same day of the March. In 1993 HOP took over the PrideFest in the Village. They also sponsored the Rally the Sunday before Pride Sunday, the Dance on the Pier on the same day, Rapture on the River (Lesbian dance the Saturday before the March) and the award ceremony in the Fall.
Heritage of Pride is members of the National Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators (NALGPC) and International Association of Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators (IAL/GPC), and Northeast Regional Conference (NERP). The folder list include some of the records of these organizations.

Heritage of Pride Statement of Inclusion:
“Heritage of Pride is a wholly volunteer-managed, non-partisan, tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation that organizes LGBT Pride events in New York City to commemorate and celebrate the Stonewall Riots [June 27, 1969]. These events are organized for and on behalf of all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and groups, and all others who support the struggle for the liberation of these communities. In the spirit of Stonewall, Heritage of Pride welcomes the participation of all, regardless of age, creed, gender, gender identification, HIV status, national origin, physical, mental or developmental ability, race, religion, or sexual orientation.”
