Virginia Casper, Ph.D
Virginia Casper is a developmental psychologist and teacher educator. She worked for many years with children and families, in early intervention and research, including as a Research Associate in the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia Medical Center and as a faculty member at Sarah Lawrence College.In the late 1980’s Virginia moved to Bank Street College of Education, where she was a faculty member in the Infant and Parent Development and Early Intervention Program for 15 years. She served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the Graduate School at Bank Street from 2002 to 2007, where she continues to serve on faculty. Virginia has also worked internationally in Eastern Europe and in South Africa where she continues to be involved. Her work has been published in Child Development, Teacher’s College Record, The Harvard Education Review and Zero to Three, and she currently serves on the Editorial Board of Zero-to-Three Press. She is currently co-writing/editing an undergraduate Early Childhood Education textbook, to be published by McGraw-Hill in fall 2009.
Virginia has been an advocate for lesbian and gay-headed parents. Her family was the test case (In re: Evan) that culminated in a decision to allow second-parent adoptions in New York State. She does training and speaking for educators and parents on LGBTQ –related issues. Her book, co-authored with Steve Schultz, is entitled: Gay Parents/Straight Schools: Building Communication and Trust (1999) won the Myers Award for a book for importance in the area of diversity. Virginia is a lesbian mother who, with her partner, Donna Futterman, raised Evan Casper-Futterman, who recently graduated from college.
