Gender Identity Project (GIP): NYC Legal Resources

Sylvia Rivera Law Project (SRLP) provides free legal services for low income people and people of color who are trans, intersex, or gender non-conforming. This collective organization also works on issues related to housing, employment, foster care, welfare, benefits, immigration, school, and the criminal justice system.

Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF) provides free legal services, as well as a name-change project, education, and advocacy, for transgender and gender non-conforming people.

Housing Works
Transgender Evening Program and Transgender Transitional Housing Program provides legal services, in addition to HIV/ AIDS services, homeless and food, support services, detox and referrals, and more. Brooklyn (718-827-8700) and Manhattan (212-645-8111) locations.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Law Association of Greater NY (LeGal) is an association of the LGBT legal community in the New York metropolitan area.

LeGal also sponsers the West Village Trans-Legal Clinic: Name Change Project, which offers assistance in filing name change petitions. Operates first Monday of each month, sign in from 6-6:30p.m (clients should arrive before 6:30p.m. to ensure they will be seen that night). 212-353-9118, 208 West 13th Street (between 7th and 8th Avenues).
