Trans Care Basics-building skills for working with transgender people
Monday, October 29, 2012, 10 AM – 1 PM

Providers working with transgender and gender nonconform-ing people often lack engagement and intervention skills, and outreach materials. Even when available, many services are challenged by social concerns and institutional barriers, as well as a lack of information about specific transgender HIV risks. Despite this, transgender-identified people have a demonstrated and urgent need for culturally competent ser-vices. In this context, facilitating access to culturally appropri-ate, accessible, and nurturing services is a significant chal-lenge. This workshop will stress trans-cultural competency and sensitivity concerns including an overview of transgender identity and community, terminology, engage-ment concerns such as barriers to care, cultural and class differences within the trans-communities, legislative develop-ments and resources. In addition to didactic material, group exercises and the viewing of a brief video may be used to develop the participant’s awareness of the breadth of identi-ties within the trans-communities.

Substance Abuse and the LGBT Community
Monday, November 19, 2012 10 AM -1 PM

This is a workshop designed to educate and support service provid-ers as well as the general public on substance abuse among the lesbian, gay, and bisexual and transgender communities and their unique needs around treatment. The workshop will provide insight into some of the underlying causes that explain the higher rates of substance abuse among the LGBT communities when compared with the general population. Also covered will be pertinent issues that need to be considered and addressed to help make differential assessments between substance abuse and mental health disor-ders, as well as to engage and retain clients. The workshop will also address the challenges that LGBT people face when seeking ser-vices. Resources for appropriate referrals will be identified and reviewed.

Trainer: Antonio Ruberto, Jr., LCSW, CASAC, Director of Center Recovery

Suicide Prevention Among LGBTQ Youth
Monday, December 3, 2012, 10 AM - 1 PM

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth face rates of suicide nearly 4 times that of their non-LGB peers, with nearly a third re-porting having made an attempt. Among transgender youth the numbers are even more staggering with nearly half hav-ing thought about taking their lives and over a quarter report-ing making an actual attempt. As social workers, teachers, school administrators, youth workers, medical providers, and other helping professional, we play a vital role in recognizing the sign of suicide risk and intervening to prevent potentially tragic outcomes among LGBTQ youth. Protective factors including school safety, peer support, positive adult role models, among others have profound impacts on supporting young people at risk. This training will provide an overview of LGBTQ youth issues, offer skills to identify and intervene to prevent suicide, as well as explore strategies to help make your setting more LGBTQ-affirming.
