Lesbian Cancer Initiative
The Lesbian Cancer Initiative (LCI) is a program of the Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual & Transgender Community Center that offers a continuum of
prevention, education and support services for lesbians, bisexual women
and transgender (LBT) people and caregivers regarding cancer.Lesbians, bisexual women and transgender (LBT) people have an increased concentration of risk factors for cancer. As a group, we are more likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, be overweight and have children at an older age or not at all.
Due to fears of discrimination and lack of health insurance, we are less likely to have routine medical screenings that would pick up cancer at an early stage. African American women and poor women may experience even more difficulties and delays in diagnosis. Cancers diagnosed at later stages can be more difficult to treat and, therefore, more dangerous.
