LCI Information & Resources
Lesbians, bisexual women and transgender (LBT) people have an increased
concentration of risk factors for cancer. As a group, we are more
likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and be overweight. We are
also less likely to have children or to do so at an older age as well
as less likely to breast feed or use oral contraceptives, which show
some ability to prevent certain cancers.
In addition, due to fears of discrimination and lack of health
insurance, we are less likely to have routine medical screenings that
would pick up cancer at an early stage. African American women and poor
women may experience even more difficulties and delays in diagnosis.
Cancers diagnosed at later stages can be more difficult to treat and,
therefore, more dangerous.
