Wingspan (Arizona)

Mission:
Southern Arizona's lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender community center

Wingspan (AZ)Begun as a weekly support group for youth in the late 1970's,
Wingspan has since grown to become Southern Arizona's largest lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender community center. Its programs
include: an anti-violence project, a youth program, a gender alliance
and a lesbian cancer and health project. Today, Wingspan has a
full-time staff of 16 and a volunteer staff of over 150 working hard to
bring a sense of family to the Tucson community.

  • Wingspan is Southern Arizona’s LGBT Community Center.
We have partnered closely with our local Planned Parenthood affiliate on several
events, including protests, trainings, forums, educational workshops, and legislative
    work.

  • Working in coalition has furthered our work by strengthening our collective,
progressive muscle. We have worked hard to educate LGBT people on how and why
reproductive rights and choice are LGBT issues. Causes in Common has provided
us with a tool to better educate the community.

  • Wingspan is part of a community forum that is being organized in response to
a 20 year old Tucson survivor of sexual assault being denied emergency contraception
at a Fry’s pharmacy because dispensing the EC was against the ‘morals’
of the pharmacist. We are also working to educate the broader community on how
the proposed anti-LGBT ballot initiative Arizona will face in November 2006
is connected to the issue of Choice.
