This film is the story of Laurel Hester, a 25-year veteran of the Ocean County, New Jersey police force. After being diagnosed with cancer, Hester spends her dying months fighting a courageous battle with leaders of Freehold, New Jersey's in hopes to have her benefits she earned as a police officer given to her partner, Stacie Andree. In the last six months of her life she had to deal with repeated denials of her request from her elected officials, the Ocean County Freeholders, even as Laurel's cancer spread to her brain. One Freeholder, John Kelly, even said that if Hester's request was granted it would "violate the sanctity of marriage." Award-winning director Cynthia Wade lived with Laurel and Stacie for the last ten weeks of Hester's life, creating an intimate, emotional piece.
This screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film's director Cynthia Wade. Limited seating is available.
