Description

elenaExhibit Tuesday, October 28, 2008 through November 21, 2008.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York from Puerto Rican parents, Castañeda is the first of their children born in the U.S. As a first-generation, bi-cultural, out lesbian, Castañeda lives in these three worlds at once, with the spiritual beliefs of her culture serving as a centering force and major influence on her work.

Castañeda paints the portrait, and the figure to explore, reveal, and honor the human spirit, one person at a time in oil, on canvas. capturing people in times of transition, painted from life by the artist also in transition. This group of paintings  has evolved out of her past expressionistic use of oil color to the classical painting methods of “under painting“, and the realistic rendering of the subject.

Castañeda has recently returned to her hometown of Brooklyn, New York after living in New Mexico for many years with her partner of 20 years.

Castañeda studied at The Art Students League of New York and received it’s Certificate in Fine Art Painting. She spent four years of study with particular attention to artistic anatomy, drawing, and life painting under the tutelage of Michael Burban, Jack Faragasso, and Mary Beth Mckenzie.

Castañeda has also completed work for art major, and holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Clinical Social Work. She is presently in postgraduate training at the Gestalt Center for Psychotherapy training of New York City. Castañeda practices privately with offices in Manhattan, and Park Slope Brooklyn. She has exhibited in New York City, Brooklyn, New Mexico, and Portland, Oregon.

Castañeda has been published in the book, “How Did You Paint That? 100 Artists Paint People & Figures” Vol 1 by International Artist Publishers.
