A benefit to launch the first-ever national education and media campaign to open up dialogue about:

  • the pressures teens face to act certain ways just because they are male or female;
  • the pervasive prejudice that fuels those pressures; and
  • the courage to break through--and be yourself.

This highly anticipated documentary delves into the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that gender performance norms and anti-gay attitudes box in everyone. How you dress, how much you eat, whether you can cry or hug a friend, what classes you take, the sports you play, the pressures to have sex, and the incorrect assumptions people make about their classmates, are just some of the complex issues this powerful new film brings to light. With breath-taking honesty, humor and pathos, the teens in Straightlaced take us into a world that’s often hard to access--what it’s really like to be in high school and the tall mountains young people have to climb in order to be who they really are.
