Braking the Cycle is a three-day cycling ride that raises much-needed funds for the HIV/AIDS services of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City.
Starting Friday, September 24, 2010, more than 120 riders will begin their three-day cycling journey from Boston to New York City. With the support of 50 volunteer crew members, they will ride 285 miles to the steps of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, demonstrating their resolve and outspokenness about HIV and AIDS.
They are riding for the thousands of people living with the epidemic who have no financial resources to help them get better, and to raise funds to support the important life-saving HIV/AIDS services of the Center.
They will ride because they have an attitude. The crisis has gone on long enough. It’s time for everyone to get an attitude about AIDS. It’s not enough to live with HIV: People deserve to thrive with HIV.
This year’s ride will include TEAM CENTERLICIOUS, a cycling team comprised of Center staff, supporters and board members. Riders are joined by a dedicated group of riders called POSITIVE PEDALERS, who master the hills with the signature orange flags on their bikes announcing themselves as HIV+. Positive Pedalers break the cycle: they thrive with HIV and demonstrate why the Center’s work is vital.
Country singer CHELY WRIGHT will host and perform during the CLOSING CEREMONY, which will be held at 5:00 PM on Sunday, September 26th. Loved ones, family and supporters will gather outside the Center on West 13th Street to welcome back the riders and crew members.
CHELY WRIGHT recently released her seventh album, Lifted off the Ground and announced to the world earlier this year, in possibly the bravest act of her career, that she is a lesbian. Wright recently released her new autobiography, Like Me, and has made her name as a commercial country singer, recording such modern-day classics as "Single White Female," "Shut Up and Drive” and “Jezebel.”
The celebration will continue inside the Center with a VICTORY PARTY and light refreshments.
Over the seven-year course of Braking the Cycle, the event has returned over $2 million to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center. To learn more about the HIV/AIDS services of the Center, visit us online at gaycenter.org.
