Women’s Event 13 to Honor Actress Cynthia Nixon, IBM’s Dr. Yvette C. Burton and Community Leader Joan Garry

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center will celebrate its 13th Annual Women’s Event on Saturday, November 6, 2010. This event is the premier women’s gala on the East Coast, The evening will include a cocktail hour, dinner and awards program, silent auction, dessert and dancing. A live auction will be held during the dinner program and will feature items from SHOWTIME and NICKELODEON.

This year's three distinguished honorees include:

Women's EventCynthia Nixon received Emmy Awards for her work on the hit TV series Sex and the City and for a guest appearance on "Law & Order SVU." Nixon won a Tony Award for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play Rabbit Hole and spoke at the National Equality March last fall. This year, she has been active with Fight Back NY, the new LGBT-funded political action committee that is targeting senators who voted against the New York State gay marriage bill last December.


 

Women's EventDr. Yvette C. Burton is currently a global Managing Business Development Executive for IBM’s Human Capital Management solutions and commercial Corporate Social Responsibility services. Dr. Burton also serves a dual role as IBM’s senior advisor for worldwide GLBT marketing strategy, advising numerous multinational corporations and government agencies on GLBT policies and programs in the US, Latin America and Southeast Asia.


 


Women's EventJoan Garry is a media executive and a civil rights leader who understands the relationship between media and public perception and stands one of America’s experts in media advocacy. During her eight years as the Executive Director of GLAAD, Garry led the organization through a series of visible and successful campaigns, notably the efforts to combat and expose the rhetoric of Dr. Laura Schlessinger, and led GLAAD as it successfully moved The New York Times to include gay and lesbian couples on its wedding pages.

The 13th annual Women’s Event features an exciting addition this year. AFTER PARTY tickets will be sold for $50 each, and includes dessert, dancing and open bar. The dinner ticket includes access to the After Party, which will run from 10 p.m. until Midnight.

Center Board members STEPHANIE BATTAGLINO and DANA SHERWOOD are serving as Event Co-Chairs. Center Board Co-Chair GWEN MARCUS is serving as Honorary Chair. The After Party Host Committee is chaired by KIRA GARCIA, with many members from the Center’s YOUNG LEADERS COUNCIL serving on the Host Committee.

The event will feature music by DJ TANNER.

The funds raised from Women’s Event 13 will fund the Center’s diverse array of programs and services geared toward women in the LGBT community, including the Lesbian Cancer Initiative; the Center Families program for LGBT parents and parents-to-be; Center CARE counseling, young women’s groups through the Youth Enrichment Services (YES) program and year-round performances/discussions by lesbian authors, entertainers and leaders in the community.
