CAN A WEB VIDEO HELP STOP HIV AMONG GAY MEN?
GROUNDBREAKING ONLINE VIDEO SERIES DEBUTS IN JUNE 2008 AT HIVBIGDEAL.ORG

Realistic, Riveting Series Grounded in Research Takes HIV Prevention into 21st Century
Josh is a young gay man living in Manhattan who had unsafe sex – and according to research, his story is startlingly effective in reducing high-risk sexual behavior among other gay men.

Josh is the fictional star of “HIV Is Still a Big Deal,” a groundbreaking online video series launching in June 2008 at www.hivbigdeal.org. Reinventing HIV prevention and education for the 21st century, the series combines the popularity, reach, and interactivity of online video with the power of research-based adult learning and education methods.

Realistic and riveting, the first two episodes follow Josh as he deals with issues like online hookups, unprotected sex, heavy drinking, condom use, disclosing HIV status, and getting tested for HIV. New episodes will launch later this year.

Grounded in rigorous statistical research, the series is a unique collaboration between two project directors from the very different fields of epidemiology and learning theory. Dr. Mary Ann Chiasson is an epidemiologist and Vice President for Research and Evaluation with Public Health Solutions, at one of the largest nonprofit organizations in New York City that merges research and disease prevention. Francine Shuch at Shaw is a faculty member of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University and a veteran researcher in learning theory and educational media.
“We’ve found that online video can be a powerful new intervention tool in the fight against HIV,” said Chiasson, who leads the Public Health Solutions Internet Research Group. "We are seeing that it can be as effective as one-on-one outreach, but with the Internet's scope, it has the potential to reach and influence thousands of men."
The series was directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Todd Ahlberg (“Meth,” and “Hooked”), who has been creating innovative video content for the Internet since 1997. “Talking About HIV,” a short documentary on HIV by Ahlberg, is also featured on the site. $10.
Limited Seating: Reservations www.gaycenter.org

Created by Carol Polcovar and directed by the legendary David Gaard, “Stonewall Stories” will leave you moved...and very, very proud. From the Shadows to the Sunlight: The First Year of Gay Liberation

This astonishing year saw the formation of radical gay organizations and the birth of the modern LGBT movement, culminating in the first Gay Pride March. This retrospective will include a panel featuring original members of the Gay Liberation Front and Gay Activist Alliance, plus a screening of rare footage from the first march and Gay-In in Central Park.

FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 2008
Lesbian Cinema Arts presents 2 great comedic films by filmmaker Andrea Meyerson
Suzanne Westenhoefer’s “A Bottom on Top” and
Kate Clinton’s “25th Anniversary Tour”
6:30 to 7:30 pm Social Hour, Screening 7:30 pm, $10
Filmed live in Indianapolis, Suzanne fires off hysterical rifts about her quirky family, wild gay cruises and struggles with strap-ons – proving once again why her girlfriend calls her the “Mayor of Inappropriate Land.” Claiming innocently that she’s just talking about everyday
things – like what happen when you have sex, what happens when your parents walk in on you having sex – Suzanne’s irreverently real style has everyone turning to one another and gasping, “That's me!”
Kate Clinton is not just an institution; she’s a comic eye in the storm of U.S. politics. Her sharp, informed humor is a voice that makes us laugh, think and then laugh some more. Andrea Meyerson (creator of the Laughing Matters series of films) captures the essential Kate Clinton on stage doing what she does best – making us laugh. Clinton riffs on menstruation, gay cruises, the passing of the Pope and dressing smartly for all those secret cameras everywhere. Meyerson captures everything from backstage banter with Clinton’s partner of 18 years, Urvashi Vaid, to the girls’ attendance at Dinah Shore Weekend. Clinton
believes that humor will get us “through peacetime, wartime and scoundrel time.” Let’s hope so!
