Culture, Arts and Appearances
TUESDAY, MAY 6, 8-10PM
Center Library Book Discussion Group
The discussion today centers around “The Exquisite Corpse” by Alfred Chester. In forty-nine brief, highly cinematic chapters, we meet a series of twisted but sincere searchers--Tomtom Jim and his naked, hungry family; Mary Poorpoor and her utterly “otherly” baby; angry John Doe and his sex slave, James Madison--each in flight from despair. As one surreal episode morphs into the next, these searchers change shape and their journeys, names and identities come and go, storylines and desires intertwine, all with the quick illogic of a dream. Voted #78 on the Publishing Triangle’s list of best lesbian and gay fiction books. http://www.howardwill.com/BookClub.htm.
THURSDAY, MAY 8, 8-10PM
Gay & Lesbian Reading Group: Plato’s Symposium

Seminars in the City: Larger than Life: Codes of Gender and Desire in Opera
What is it about opera that gay men and lesbians love? Much ink has been spilled addressing this question, and this series of seminars will try to find some answers, both exploring some of the literature that claims opera as a distinctly queer art form, and analyzing the operas themselves. ASL interpretation can be provided if requested 10 or more working days prior to the event. To RSVP and obtain a course reading packet contact CLAGS: 212.817.1955, clags@gc.cuny.edu, www.clags.org.
TUESDAY, MAY 13, RECEPTION 6PM, PROGRAM 7PM, $10
Center Voices & Center Kids presents
Author Andrea Askowitz in Conversation with writers Linda Villarosa, Karin Cook, Louise Sloan and Rose Arce
Come hear author Andrea Askowitz read from her new book, My Miserable, Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy, a funny, whiny, all-too-real account of one girl’s true adventure in maternity. From finding a great donor who turns out to be shooting blanks (‘’I was a lesbian with male fertility problems’’) through all-day morning
sickness and graduation into ‘’fat-girl underwear,’’ Andrea’s life reads like an antidote to sugar-sweet pregnancy guides and memoirs. In week 8, her sense of smell becomes so strong that she can tell what
deodorant people are wearing. In week 28, she plans a pity party, complete with black-only dress code and a violin player. Joining her in conversation are lesbian moms and writers Karin Cook (What Girls Learn), Louise Sloane (Knock Yourself Up: No Man? No Problem – A Tell-all Guide to Becoming a Single Mom), and Linda Villarosa (The Black Parenting Book). Moderated by Center Kids Director Terry Boggis.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 7PM, FREE
Center Voices presents
Terrance Dean and Hip-Hop’s Gay Sub-Culture
A riveting memoir, Hiding In Hip Hop, uncovers a hidden and well-known unspoken secret. Deep within the confines of Hip-Hop is a prominent gay sub-culture. A world that industry insiders are keenly aware of, but choose to ignore. From the testosterone of men striving to be on top and in control, to the “by any means necessary” bravado in an industry that thrives on power, homosexuality is a reality at nearly
every level of Hip-Hop. Hiding In Hip Hop is a heartfelt sojourn of a young man searching for self,
love, and sexual identity in the most homophobic places – the black family, community, church, and Hip Hop. Dean takes readers on an emotional rollercoaster ride as he becomes romantically involved with some of Hollywood’s and Hip Hop’s elite, and into an underground world of down low brothers, sex parties, and love starved celebrities. Struggling to find a place for himself in a homophobic culture, Dean’s compelling story is one of hope, love, and in spite of everything, coming to terms with one’s self and being a catalyst for change and empowerment in the game of Hip-Hop.
THURSDAY, MAY 15, 6PM, $15
Center Classics presents: Classic Opera
This first installment of the Center Classics series will explore Italian operatic scenes from the Baroque period to the 20th Century. The chosen works include excerpts of Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Mascagni and Puccini, and will contrast “light” and “dark” (chiaroscuro) musical settings from each of the significant periods of the Italian operatic repertoire. The program features a group of young, professional singers who are currently active in the local operatic community. Highlights of the program include excerpts from Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Così fan Tutte, Anna Bolena, Cavalleria Rusticana and Madama Butterfly. For more information about the Classic Opera Series go to www.gaycenter.org
THURSDAY, MAY 15, RECEPTION 6PM, PROGRAM 7PM, $10
Center Voices presents
William N. Eskridge, Jr., author of Dishonorable Passions: Sodomy Laws in America
William N. Eskridge, Jr., is John A. Garver Professor of Jurisprudence at Yale Law School. His research and writings provided a foundation for the landmark Supreme Court ruling of Lawrence v. Texas (2003), which invalidated consensual sodomy laws. He is the coauthor (with Darren Spedale) of Gay Marriage: For Better or for Worse? and author of Gaylaw: Challenging the Apartheid of the Closet. From the Pentagon to the wedding chapel, there are few issues more controversial today than gay rights. As William Eskridge persuasively demonstrates in Dishonorable Passions, there is nothing new about this political and legal obsession. The American colonies and the early states prohibited sodomy as the “crime
against nature,” but rarely punished such conduct if it took place behind closed doors.
FRIDAY, MAY 16, 8-10:30PM
MACT Screens Michael Moore’s Film “SICKO”
The multiracial gay men’s organization Men of All Colors Together/NY will view Michael Moore’s controversial film “SICKO”—a scathing indictment of the United States’ health care system. A discussion of health care policy will follow, which will continue on the following Friday (May 23). This issue is vital to all gay people, not only because of the threat of AIDS, but simply because we, like other citizens, need more and more health care as we grow older. Suggested contribution: $5.00. 908.289.3714, fire.press@verizon.net, www.mactny.org.
SATURDAY, MAY 17, 1-3PM

Lesbian Cinema Arts presents Robin’s Hood
A low-budget lesbian romance and adventure film involving a young woman who falls under the seductive charms of another, and together they embark on a crime spree. Robin is a disillusioned social worker living in the shadow of Sherwood Forest (a.k.a. Oakland, CA) who truly believes she can positively impact the world until frustrations at her job force her to rethink her life. Adventures lurk around the corner when a life of justifiable crime commences and an intense romance flourishes with poetic symmetry. As they “rob from the rich and give to the poor,” these outlaws fight racism, oppression and poverty from the corrupt police (à la Sheriff of Nottingham and King John). Love ignites and lines cross during an emanating whirlwind of passion and robbery that leads our heroines to danger. Set to a backdrop of hip-hop and the rhythms of the inner city, Robin’s Hood is a blue-collar fairy tale. Director Sara Millman’s debut feature, produced with funds raised in part through sidewalk sales and street donations in San Francisco’s Castro district, beautifully tackles everyday issues in an intriguing manner all under the watchful eyes of two pure romantics.

Center Orientation presents ENERGY: Managing it, harnessing it’s power, and attaining what you want for your life
Everything is energy and energy is contagious. Both in business and in our personal lives, if we are constantly on the run, feeling pressured from every angle, then it’s only a matter of time before we begin to let opportunities pass us by, believe we’re not living up to our fullest potential or, worse, begin to break down emotionally and physically. Our thoughts, which come from our global belief system (meaning how we view ourselves, others and the world at large) create and trigger our energy level. Our perceptions and how we view everything become deeply ingrained by this process. This affects our relationships, our ability to attract a partner, our ability to succeed in our careers, jobs and businesses. But there is an answer and a way to break the cycle. Learn how.
