Gay Porn Superstar Bobby Blake:A Conversation about Race and Porn

NEW YORK – The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center will present a conversation with the only long-term African-American gay video superstar, Bobby Blake, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, at the Center, 208 West 13th Street.

Next spring the 50-year-old actor will publish his autobiography, The Bobby Blake Story, which explores growing up black and gay in the contradictory religious environment of the Deep South.  The porn actor will share his experiences and entertain questions from the audience.

Bobby Blake is a gay video superstar who just happens to be African-American.  Many black actor/models have enjoyed popularity, but none have broken through color lines as successfully and completely as Blake, and none have enjoyed such long-term staying power in the gay porn industry.  Jack Simmons rarely appears with other black models and doesn’t headline his own films.  T-Spoon and Andre Bolla remain niche players while Austin Black and Bam only work sporadically.

One filmmaker says, “You can put Bobby’s face on anything, any kind of movie, and it will sell.”

The Bobby Blake Story is the only book about the sex industry to reveal a black gay perspective combined with a portrayal of the experience of growing up black and gay in the South.  His story describes the strong emphasis of the tension between the black church and sexual self expression and also traces his incredible journey into the stellar reaches of gay porn, using a strong, confident attitude combined with extreme masculine physicality.

Admission is $10.  For further information, visit www.gaycenter.org or call (212) 620-7310.
