On Thursday, March 8th the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center and Saint-At Large will host a one-day-only erotic art exhibition displaying rarely seen Black Party posters from 1981 to 2012.
The kinship between art, specifically gay erotic art and The Black Party, dates back to 1981 when the inaugural poster for Rites I and II was created in collaboration with up and coming, gay New York photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. This poster set a standard and established a legacy that continues to this day. For 32 years, Black Party posters have continued to embody the defining characteristics of the original poster - its dark tone, provocative (homo) sexually charged imagery and the quality of its production and design. Over the years, many Black Party posters have become collector’s items and their annual release - a clear sign to all that Black Party season is upon us - has become a highly anticipated event.
This special event will take the form of a cocktail reception, featuring a drawing circle with model Joe Zaso (who will be nude) and of course the steamiest posters ever to grace New York's grittiest walls. The Center and Saint-At-Large welcomes members of the community to experience ART + SIN as a celebration of sensuality, sin and everything in between.
Also included in this special event presentation:
EXPOSED: THE BPX ZINE: See some of the original artwork and meet some of the artists featured in this year's zine, published in collaboration with SPUNK [arts] Magazine and curated by New York artist and designer Aaron Tilford.
BLACK PARTY RAFFLES & GIVEAWAYS: Expo event tickets, special edition t-shirts, and a chance to purchase one of the original posters featured in the event.
