TEMPORARY EMERGENCY SHELTER

(NYC Dept. of Homeless Services)

All individuals in need of temporary shelter/choosing to enter the shelter system, MUST FIRST GO THROUGH AN APPLICATION PROCESS at one of the following 24 hour Shelter Intake/Assessment Centers:

Jamaica Armory Women’s Intake/Assessment Center

Walk on Archer Avenue to 93rd avenue OR take the F train to 169th street station.
Walk to 168th street and Hillside Avenue; proceed along 168th street to 93rd avenue.

Transfer to BX15 or BX55 bus (on 3rd Avenue) to East 166th Street.
Walk up the hill on East 166th Street to Franklin Avenue.

Families Intake/Assessment Center

Families are defined as husband & wife, individuals with children OR registered domestic partners.  (Same sex couples/unregistered domestic partners are NOT recognized under the NYC Dept. of Homeless Services’ definition of family.)
All families must report to the Emergency Assistance Unit

Walk to McDonalds and turn left.
Walk one block to Walton Ave. & East 151st Street.

CITYWIDE MOBILE OUTREACH (EMERGENCY) RESPONSE

Available 24 HOURS

Van service providing outreach to people living on streets by encouraging them to accept shelter services. 
Van will NOT transport individuals to Intake/Assessment Centers.
Van will pick up individual and drive them to the appropriate site for
Emergency overnight shelter (chairs, NOT BEDS, are provided), food, detox, etc.
Call and provide street location of individual in need.

COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS

The Coalition for the Homeless is a non-profit organization that provides direct service programs designed to provide a continuum of care for homeless individuals and families in virtually every conceivable situation.
Through the Coalition for the Homeless’ Crisis Intervention Program, homeless individuals and families can obtain assistance in the following:

-Intake/Assessment Center: Referral letter recognizing you as a client of the Coalition for the Homeless (application process at Intake/Assessment center is still necessary);

-Shelter problems: Assistance with problems such as mistreatment by shelter staff or security guards, complaints about shelter conditions and services, shelter transfers, lost or damaged property in municipal shelters, problems in drop-in centers.

-Food: Pantries (depending on availability), soup kitchens information

-Clothing: (depending on availability)

-Police Harassment: Assistance & referral

-Benefits: Assistance with benefits in welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, SSI/SSD, fair hearings & WEP issues, referral letters to apply for welfare

-Housing: Assistance with Section 8 & public housing problems

-Referral Letters: Referral letters for legal assistance, immigration services, domestic violence survivors, detox or addiction treatment, job training programs

-Mailing address:

-Domestic Partnership:
Assistance with domestic partnership applications

-Youth Services: After school and weekend programs
