Out at The Center - September 2008 Edition


Hosted by Laverne Cox, the Center’s half-hour TV show opens with a unique intergenerational technology learning experience where LGBT youth from YES mentor elders from SAGE in basic computer skills. Mara Keisling explains the National Center for Transgender Equality. The Center’s Immigration Support Services presents a panel on the ABCs of Immigration in partnership with GMHC and Immigration Equality. Out Professionals looks at 25 years of lesbian and gay sports in Homerun or Strike out and there are performance highlights from the OUTmusic Open Mic night.


Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox made television history as the first African American transgender woman to be featured on an American reality show when she appeared as a finalist on VH1’s “I Want to Work for Diddy”. As an actress Laverne Cox has appeared on “Law and Order: SVU” and an MTV news special on colleague, Britney Houston. She will soon be featured in a campaign for the Swiss skin care line “I Am”. She has acted in various independent films including the awarding winning “The Kings of Brooklyn” and “Daughter of Arabia.” She has appeared at performance venues all over New York City as an actress, dancer and emcee including Radio City Music Hall, P.S. 122, Dixon Place, La Mama Etc., Galapagos, The Duplex, The Producer’s Club, and Lucky Chengs. She has been a rotating host for Out at the Center since 2006 and appeared in the Gender Identity Project's educational video Transgender Basics.
