Braking the Cycle

JOIN US AT THE BRAKING THE CYCLE CLOSING CEREMONY!

More than 120 riders will begin a three-day cycling journey from Boston to New York City beginning on Friday, September 16, 2011. With the support of 50 volunteer crew members, they will ride 285 miles to the steps of the Center, demonstrating their resiliency and dedication to stopping HIV/AIDS.

CELEBRATE THE BRAKING THE CYCLE RIDERS AT THE CLOSING CEREMONY on Sunday, September 18 at 5 PM at the Center! Loved ones, family and supporters will gather outside the Center at 208 West 13th Street with host out lesbian singer Chely Wright to welcome back the riders and crew members. The celebration will continue inside the Center with a Victory Party sponsored by GO Burger and Brooklyn Brewery.

The funds raised at Braking the Cycle will support the important life-saving HIV/AIDS services of the Center, which supports key youth HIV prevention programs and assist thousands of people living with HIV who have limited no financial resources with which to cope with this disease.

In its nine-year history, Braking the Cycle has raised over $2.5 million for the Center’s vital HIV and AIDS services.

Join us as we congratulate and thank the riders on Sunday, September 18!

Chely Wright released her seventh album, Lifted off the Ground, and her autobiography, Like Me, in 2010 and announced to the world, in possibly the bravest act of her career, that she is a lesbian. An award winning documentary on her life, Wish Me Way, was premiered in several film festivals including Nashville, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Wright has made her name as a commercial country singer, recording such modern-day classics as "Single White Female," "Shut Up and Drive” and “Jezebel.”

This is the ride of your life!

Braking the Cycle, the three-day bike ride from Boston to New York, benefiting the HIV/AIDS services of the Center. Starting Friday, September 16, 2011, join more than 120 cyclists, supported by 60 volunteer crew members, for a three-day journey from Boston to the steps of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.

Braking the Cycle is not your ordinary charity ride. It isn’t even a typical AIDS ride.

  • It’s more intimate: Up to 150 riders pedaling to make a difference.
  • It’s a family: Each year, two-thirds of our riders come back to join us again.
  • It’s significant: With each rider raising $3,500 for HIV/AIDS services, this ride is the largest annual fundraiser to support the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.
  • It’s life-changing: We hear it time and again: “Braking the Cycle changed my life.” The passion, the community and the love on this ride will make you a different person… and a better one.
  • We take our inspiration from an incredible group of riders: the Positive Pedalers who master the hills with the signature orange flags on their bikes announcing themselves as HIV+. Too many people see a cycle of sickness and shame in HIV. Our Positive Pedalers break the cycle. They thrive with HIV. They demonstrate why the Center’s work is vital.
