Creative Corner

Black and white drawing At the YES program we believe everyone has a right to creative self-expression, uncensored.

We provide plenty of opportunities for young people to get involved in the creative arts, to work with guest artists from the community, and to participate in cultural events through field trips.

One of the special projects is the ’Zine:

“What’s a ‘ZINE?”
– It’s a cut & paste self-made magazine filled with art, photos, poems, stories, quotes, and questions. Want to help create the next issue? Join us on Thursdays 6pm-7pm.

“During the summer of 2012, YES collaborated with community art educator Michel Levesque on a series of workshops called “The YES Comic Book Project,” where young people from our program learned the skills to develop their own comic creations. Started by Dr. Michael Bitz over a decade ago right here in New York City, the Comic Book Project (CBP) is an alternative approach to literacy for students through making original comic books and is now used in diverse educational and community settings throughout the world. In “The YES Comic Book Project” youth were able to use visual imagery and story-telling to explore identity and what it means to be an LGBTQ or allied young person. Please check out some of their incredible work here: YES Comic Book Project
