A letter from the YES Program

Dear Parents and Family Members:

We are invested in supporting your children as well as you and your families during what is often a challenging time of transition and discovery. Our programs offer your young person a very special opportunity to make friends, learn leadership skills, and be involved in health promotion activities. Plus we have a Summer Community Camp– a week of living on the shore of a beautiful lake, going boating and hiking, doing art projects, and having fun in a safe environment.

All of our programs are completely free for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and “questioning” young people between the ages of 13 and 21. Our youth have so much to deal with when it comes to being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Our programs are designed to provide them with support and resources for staying safe and making healthy decisions. It also helps to end the loneliness that so many of our young people feel during adolescence.

All families go through an adjustment process when someone comes out as being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Many people are uncomfortable talking about sexual orientation and gender. That’s normal! This group is just a way to help your parents deal with all their feelings and their questions. It’s a way to help families stay together.

YES maintains a close partnership with PFLAG NYC (Parents and Friends of Lesbians) and Gays & PFLAG for Families of Color and Allies in NYC. They hold confidential monthly support groups at the Center for parents, friends, and family members of LGBT people. You can find out more information about their program on Information and Referrals.

Should you ever have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the number listed below. We are here to support your child, your family, your community, and you!
